#9 – A return envelope measuring 3⅞ in. x 8⅞ in. that can fit within a standard #10 envelope.
#10 – A standard business sized envelope that measures 4⅛ by 9½ inches.
2D – The 2D data matrix is scanned by the camera at the end of the inserter. This data is validated at the time of scan and will stop the inserter if there is any exception to the expected pieces. Used for UPT.
2 DAD – A ¼ x ¼ inch square that prints at the bottom of the page and used for document assembly. This code is scanned at the beginning of the inserting process.

5 Digit Presort Rate – A type of automation rate based on a five-digit zip code. (Reference)
A
AADC Presort Rate – A type of automation rate based on a three-digit zip code. (Reference)
Acceptance Rate – The percentage of email messages that are accepted by the mail server.
ACS – Address Change Service – A Move Update option in which the USPS offers an automated service to electronically send all addresses which have been changed. FSSI requires all customers using ACS to sign a “U.S. Post Office Move Update Regulation Release Form” for each separate job and attach it to the Mail Checklist.
Analytics – The discovery and communication of meaningful patterns in data.
Application Code (AppCode) – Defines each unique job, based on: Unique Stock or outer envelopes; Paper weight & size; Special mailing/routing. The AppCode consists of Customer Initials + Application Number (e.g. ABC001). Accounting develops the Customer Initials and Client Services defines the Application Number.
APQ – Application Profile Questionnaire – Used to gather information for new projects.
ASR – Address Service Requested – A Move Update option by which Address Services Requested is offset printed or printed by the meter indicia on all envelopes – the USPS will print the new address on the envelope and send the Return Addresser, via Form 3547, a copy of the envelope with the new address. This is one of the easiest Move Update methods however, if the customer’s name and address database are not up to date it may be the most expensive.
Automated Inserting – Inserting equipment at FSSI consists of Pitney Bowes and Bell & Howell inserters, which utilize 2D data matric and camera technology to validate at the sheet level when the paper is fed. Mailing Department averages about 10 million mail pieces per month.
Autorun – Autorun is the program that is launched to process the client input data using the custom developed appcode “program.” It is a .DLL – a Dynamic Link Library. Autorun creates the work order and analyzes the client input data file names to determine which workgroup is assigned to the work order.
B
BAFN – Bad Addresses (BA) and Foreign mail (FN) – Mail that cannot be presorted and must be mailed at the full rate or be returned to the client. Pieces are routed to this file split if the CASS software cannot find a valid address (i.e. no deliver point validation “DPV”). We can’t programmatically determine if a record is just bad or foreign mail, so they go into the same file split and we let Custom Inserting (CI) sort and apply the correct pieces manually.
BIGS – A statement that cannot be inserted on our automated inserting machines and usually is mailed in a 9×12″ or larger envelope.
Billing Calendar – A calendar created to project the anticipated quantities and mail dates for the current or upcoming month.
Bin Number – This is the insert station that will automatically be assigned to the inserter.
Black List – A list that denotes a sender as a spammer, making it difficult for the sender to get future emails into an inbox.
BPI – Bytes Per Inch – A unit to measure an amount of data.
BRE – Business Reply Envelope – Prepaid envelope that is addressed to the mailer. This envelope type needs a permit with an annual fee. (Reference)
C
Call-to-Action – An instruction to the audience to provoke an immediate response.
CAN-SPAM Act – Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003 – a law that outlines rules for commercial email, establishes requirements for commercial messages, provides email recipients with the right to make you stop emailing them, and lays out consequences for violations of the Act.
Capacity – Currently operating an average of 15 hours per day across 2 shifts, FSSI has two printers with the capacity to print 2.5 million letter size images and 200,000 6”x 9” cards per day.
CAR – Corrective Action Report – Report that lists the defects that need to be corrected.
CASS – Coding Accuracy Support System – A program by the USPS to verify the “cleanliness” of a database to achieve postal discounts. It is similar to the NCOA (National Change of Address) Report.
Certified Mail – Provides the sender with a mailing receipt and electronic verification that a piece was delivered or that a delivery attempt was made. (Reference)
Closed Loop Marketing – Being able to execute, track and show how marketing efforts have impacted bottom-line business growth.
CO – Computer Operations – Responsible for the processing and monitoring of work orders as well as managing file movement and routing. CO also assists with QA testing and IT support tasks.
COM – Certificate of Mail – A receipt with the date a mail piece was received by the postal service for mailing. (Reference)
Comma-delimited – Data format in which each piece of data is separated by a comma.
Content – A piece of information that exists for the purpose of being digested, engaged with, and shared.
Conversion Path – A series of website-based events that facilitate lead capture.
Count – The number of images/pages/mail pieces in a job. Counts from customers and counts within each department must match.
CRE – Courtesy Reply Envelope – Reply envelope that is provided along with the mail piece; does not include postage. (Reference)
CRLF – Carriage Return Line Feed
CSV –Comma Separated Values – Tabular data that is saved as plaintext data separated by commas.
Customer Code – The unique code consisting of three initials, established by the Accounting Department for each customer. This code is used in CO for processing all jobs, by the mainframe and by warehouse for establishing inventory codes.
Cut Sheet – Printed output that is rewound to create a printed roll.
Cycle Number – The number used to indicate the day of the month when our customers initialize a billing cycle.
D
Deliverability – The ability to get an email into the intended recipient’s inbox.
DKIM – DomainKeys Identified Mail – Also known as “digital signature,” this is a method for associating a domain name with an email message, allowing a person, role, or organization to claim some responsibility for the message.
DMC – Digital Mailing Checklist – The DMC includes mailing instructions, followed by specific instructions for each print file. Print files are populated in the DMC by what is setup in the File Setup Form.
Double Opt-In – In order for a user to be added to an email list, they get sent an email with a confirmation link after they initially opt in. After the user clicks the link, they are added to the ongoing email communication.
DPBC – Delivery Point Bar Code – A USPS barcode which consists of a 12 digit or 62 bar barcode formatted as follows: zip+4 + 2-digit delivery point + check digit.
DPI – Dots Per Inch – Used to measure the resolution of an image. DPI measures how many dots fit into a linear inch, therefore, the higher the DPI, the more detail can be shown in the image.
DPS – Digital Print Services – Information on each piece is pulled from the print file to update the database with a date/time stamp, as well as to generate a 2D data metric that prints in the address block on the statement.
Drop Date – Last mail drop date pulled from the WO.
DSO – dataStreamOne™– Once APQs are completed, FSSI Team creates a “WorkFront Project” for developers to create an Application Program for each AppCode to do the following: compose the documents based on the approved look and feel; generate 2D barcodes for Document Assembly & Unique Piece Tracking; establish file and mail routing rules; generate USPS IMBs; and, generate a Count Report with the number of pieces, pages, images and other metrics.
Duplex – Printing on both sides of a sheet of paper.
E
E-Bill – The electronic delivery and presentation of an invoice from any biller to a consumer.
EBPP – Electronic Bill Presentment and Payment – The electronic presentation of billing forms via the internet, with the capability of processing payment online.
eForm – Electronic Forms are digital versions of paper forms or stock equivalents.
Emtex (PIOM) – Print Input Output Manager. The print server attached to the Xerox laser printers. This system also converts data to a format readable by Xerox printers.
ESO – eStreamOne™– This application offers multiple presentment formats and infrastructure options, such as PDF and/or HTML presentment. Additionally, eSO includes infrastructure options such as Application Programming Interface (API), Single Sign-On (SSO) authentication at your mobile banking app or website, and CPB-branded, FSSI-hosted solution.
Expected Count – For inserts defined as “Selective,” this count comes from the program processing as the “Expected count.” For static inserts, this number is derived by utilizing the entire piece count for an output file.
Expediter Process – Verify that all necessary information needed/materials are available to start a job.
F
FASTforward – A Move Update option by which pre-sorting houses have received licenses for their equipment to identify changes of address and print them on the envelope while sorting the mail. This is usually the easiest method for all mailers to process their mail.
File Split – File segments of a work order.
File Stage – When files are received by clients through the SFTP server, they are automatically picked up and archived and the Account Rep receives a “File Stage” email with the file and location information.
FIM – Facing Identification Marks – Vertical bars used by USPS on envelopes in the processing of letter mail. (Reference)
FIPS – Federal Information Processing Standard – Standards and guidelines for federal computer systems. Developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. (Reference) Fix – Used to reprint damaged mail pieces, such as when a statement was torn or destroyed during the printing or mailing production process and needs to be recreated and mailed. (Same as reprint)
Flat File – A plain text file, either delimited, or a fixed record length file with a specific record layout provided by the data provider.
Flexo – Printing method for long-run envelope jobs.
FSL – Form Source Library –
FTP – File Transfer Protocol – An internet application protocol, or method, used to send data via the internet.The protocol is a set of rules that ensures a file is transmitted properly to the receiving computer.
FTP/SFTP Server – The computer that stores files that can be retrieved using FTP.

Glassine – A smooth, dense semi-transparent paper used in the window of an envelope.

Hard Bounce – A permanent failure to deliver an email usually due to a non-existent, invalid, or blocked email address.
HTML – Hypertext Markup Language – A language used to write web pages.

Image – Print on one side of a single 8 ½” x 11” sheet.
IMB – Intelligent Mail Barcode – Barcode used to sort and track letters and flats. (Reference)
Indicia – Markings on a mail piece indicating the sender has prepaid the postage. (Reference)
Input Data – The data received from the customer that is used for printing.
Insert – A newsletter, envelope or any other piece of paper to be inserted into an envelope along with the address-bearing document.
Insert Type – This field indicates whether the insert for this bin is “Selective” (controlled by a bar code) or “Static” (goes with every piece in the file).
IPT – Internal Piece Tracking – Applications with IPT follow the same process as UPT, but the clients do not have access to the reports through WSO.
L
Landscape – Print oriented horizontally to the longest side of the sheet of paper. The width is greater than the height.
LSO – letterStreamOne™ – This web-based dynamic correspondence solution allows authorized users to manage letters in MS-Word and link to FSSI’s digital print and fulfillment center for speedy, high-quality production.
Litho Printing – Users wet ink and printing plates, instead of toners on a press as in the case of digital printing. (Reference)
Lockbox – A service by which a bank processes and company’s payments from a post office box and deposits them directly into the company’s bank account.
Lockbox Address – The address on the remittance stub where our customers’ clients send payment for their bill.
LoE – Level of Effort – Estimated by senior developers upon review of APQ and data.
M
Mail Checklist – The form sent to FSSI by the customer indicating all selective and standard inserts, the quantity of statements expected, the approximate mail date and any other pertinent information for the job.
Mailcodes – A group or file of statements that require special handling by mail or do not get mailed at all.
Mailstream Plus – Software that optimizes postal rate qualification.
Manifest – USPS document certifying address accuracy and listing pieces of mail by zip code. This document is used by the Mailing Department to sort mail pieces by zip code for the USPS.
Material Carousel – Images of the envelopes and inserts needed to complete a mailing job. Note: All material needs to be viewed by the QA before the system will allow for a Quality Assurance sign-off.
MCD – Mail Control Document – Used by operators for each File Segment. Added at the end of each File Segment of every work order. Enables operators to view DMC, and electronically set up parameters to the Inserting equipment.
MICR – Magnetic Ink Character Recognition – Secure method of printing checks.
Micro Number – Small, tracking numbers printed on each bill to allow FSSI to verify accurate and complete printing and inserting of all files transmitted.
Move Update – In order to retain the lowest presort or automation postage rates, the USPS requires all mailers to ensure up-to-date address information on envelopes. In order to post presorted or automated mail, as a mailer, FSSI or our subcontracted pre-sorting house certify that the addresses were updated within 6 months of the date. There are several Move Update options: FASTforward, ASR, NCOA, ACS, or RSR.
MSO – messageStreamOne™ – gives design control over text and graphics which are dynamically placed in defined areas for printed and e-presented documents.
MTS – Mail Piece Tracking System – Used to track work orders and files that may require modifications while in production.
N
NCOA – National Change of Address – A Move Update option in which the customer sends a database with all names and addresses to a company licensed by the USPS to receive all change-of-address data. The licensed companies offer NCOA services by accepting mailing lists and providing address standardization, ZIP+4 coding and change of address information. The customer then downloads the cleansed addresses back into their database. FSSI requires all customers using NCOA to sign a “U.S. Post Office Move Update Regulation Release Form” for each separate job and attach it to the Mail Checklist. This may be the most cost-effective service if it is possible for the customer to download their database for an NCOA vendor and upload the changes they process.
NOOP/NOP – No Print Record
No Mail – A statement or file of statements that do not get mailed with the other statements; usually they are returned to the customer.
Non-Selective Insert – Any insert whose predetermined criteria cause it to be included in the entire mailing. Standard inserts must be listed on the Mail Checklist but do not require an OMR barcode printed on the statement.
O
OCR – Optical Character Recognition – “Electronic or mechanical conversion of images of typed, handwritten or printed text into machine-encoded text.” (Reference)
Offset Printing – Also known litho printing. Printing on paper or envelope stock by printing presses before the paper or envelopes are processed at FSSI.
OMR – Optical Machine Recognition – Barcodes that are read by FSSI’s automated collating and intelligent inserting machines to determine how many pages to collate and which and how many inserts to pull for each envelope inserted.
Open Rate – The percentage of recipients who opened your email message.
Out of Stock Instructions – Input by the AR, this information will be used to determine what to do if during the processing of the job we run out of material.
Output Data – The customer’s data after it has been processed and is ready to be printed.
Overring – An envelope with postage applied that is not being mailed.

PCC – Postal Customer Council – Local PCC’s provide information for cost-effective and profitable mailing, education and training, and resolution of challenges.

Piece Tracking – UPT/IPT designator pulled from the Work Order.
Piece Weight – The weight of the individual insert as weighed by the Warehouse department. This information will be used by the inserter combined with the other weights in a particular envelope to determine postage changes based on overall envelope weight if applicable.
PO – Purchase Order – All purchases for FSSI require an approved PO in advance.
Portrait – Printed material is vertically aligned to the longest length of the page. The height is greater than the width.
Postage Rates – Postage rate pulled in from the database based on Postage Category selected (1 oz weight is the default.)
Postnet Barcode – Postal Numbering Encoding Technique– Barcode symbols used by USPS in which the zip code is encoded in full- and half-height bars.
Preprinted Stock – Pre-designed cut sheet stock.
Presort – FSSI has a strategic partnership with a presort company, Quicksort, that is located within our building. Our working relationship allows for close control of mail pieces until prior to being released to the USPS.
Presort House – A mail facility that sorts and/or applies a USPS DPBC to each mail piece allowing customers to receive a discounted postage rate.
Print Image – All the data printed on one side of a sheet of paper.
Project Plan – Based on receipt of test data and Required Go Live Date, the project plan details the Scope of the Conversion, defines responsibilities and roles, and is reviewed at weekly meetings.
Promotion Test – The process to test and verify development changes in a production environment.
PS – Postscript –
PSO – PriceStreamOne™ – All price sheets are kept in digital form in our online portal PSO. This portal can be accessed by entering PSO into your browser URL. Each AR has an inbox that will show any price sheets pending approval, rejected or drafts that are pending submission.
PTWO – Promotion Test Work Order – The WO used to process a promotion test.
Pull – A mail piece removed from the printed output by the AR.

QR Code – Two-dimensional barcode.
QSO – qualityStreamOne™ – FSSI’s tool used to generate work orders, plan and schedule jobs, and record and verify stock inventory.

RAM – Random Access Memory – The hardware in a computing device where the operating system, program, and data are kept. (Reference)
RDBMS – Relational Database Management System -database that stores data to be used in relation to other datasets. (Reference)
Ream – 500 sheets of paper
Reconciler – Checks all manual entries, fixes, and pulls.
Remittance Envelope – The envelope inserted into an envelope to be used by the customers’ clients to mail in their payments.
Reprint – A statement that was torn or destroyed during the printing or mailing production process and needs to be recreated and mailed. A reprint is the same as fix.
Residual – Mail that does not qualify for automation rates.
RIP – Raster Image Processor
Roll to Roll – Inkjet output that is rewound to create a printed roll.
RSR – Return Service Requested – A Move Update option in which the USPS will return the mail piece to the return address with a new address or reason for non-delivery attached. This option would delay the delivery of some pieces in your mailing.
S
Selective Insert – Any insert whose predetermined criteria cause it to be inserted into less than the entire mailing. All selective inserts must be listed on the Mail Checklist with the Insert Station Numbers corresponding to the OMR barcodes programmed in the statement files.
Simplex – One-sided printing.
Single Opt-In – This usually involves a user’s form entry and immediately adds that person to a live email list.
Soft Bounce – Temporary problems with email delivery such as a full inbox or unavailable server. If, after 72 hours, the email still cannot be delivered to the inbox, it turns into a hard bounce.
Spam – Unsolicited, or not work-safe email.
Spam Report – When someone receives your email and labels it as spam.
Stock – Paper or envelopes used to print and mail customer statements.
Statement – 1 mail piece possibly consisting of multiple images.
Stock Code – Code used to describe a specific type of stock.

Tab-delimited text file – File containing tabs that separate information with one record per line. (Reference)
Traffic Cop – Traffic Cop monitors this central location where ALL output files from CO processed WOs are routed. Traffic Cop manages a certain set of rules and exceptions to properly route output for production.
Tray Call – A programmatic identifier that determines when a printer tray is to be used for specific stock or forms.
Tyvek – A special envelope manufactured by DuPont from spun-bonded olefin material for maximum protection and durability at a very lightweight.
U
Undeliverable Mail Status – Mailing instructions for how to hand undeliverable mail pulled from the Checklist
UPT – Unique Piece Tracking – Ensures that all documents received are processed, printed, and mailed accurately. The UPT is a ¼ x ¼ inch square printed in the address block.
